Art Nouveau

About 120 years ago, in 1888, the first Arts and Crafts Exhibition took place in London. Many exhibitions followed in several different cities through out Europe and the USA until the outbreak of the Second World War.

Some of the most important were the 1893 Chicago Exposition, the Exposition Internationale in Paris in 1900, the Turin Exposition of 1902, St Louis 1904, and the Paris expositions of 1925 and 1937.

The development of both the decorative and the geometric styles in Silver can be followed through these exhibitions.

The Art Nouveau period was the 30 odd years between the 1880s and 1915.

After the First World War, a style with a much more geometrical quality evolved, this was Art Deco.

As an artist, I have a diverse range of interests and influences, but perhaps my most influential is the Art Nouveau Period, particularly the years between 1885 and 1910. Lalique, Mucha, Dufrene, Jensen, just to name a few.
